i own a small bakery business, i graduated culinary school in April. my dad has been helping me since he knows a shit ton of people… and this morning 2 people (one was family, and one was a friend of his) went behind my back and texted him INSTEAD OF MESSAGING ME that a product they received didn’t turn out correctly. im more upset that they went behind my own back than telling me, yes i am BEYOND upset that i gave away a defective product BUT what broke me was they never wanted to say anything AND GO BEHIND MY BACK to say anything. Just tell me, because we both can work together on what the refund will look like, which was full cash refund or something else in exchange for the defective product.

    Business shouldn’t be emotional.

You have to reel this in.

Would you say this if they went behind your back and left a Google/YELP review?

It’s possible they didn’t want to hurt your feelings or they felt more comfortable telling him because they know him better. In situations like this I find it’s always best to look for the good, not dwell on the bad. The good here is they didn’t go out and tell a bunch of people that your product was bad, they went directly to the source and now you have the opportunity to turn this into an amazing experience for them. Go above and beyond to fix it, maintain a positive attitude and it’ll come back ten-fold.

i told them they have 2 options, a full refund of their money, or they can get anything else in exchanged from their product that turned defective.

They assume he’s the one in charge, or they take his helping you and your being fresh out of school and green as, again, he’s in charge. It is what it is and it likely won’t change.

Your dad probably has better customer service skills so they reached out to him. Improve your cusr service skills or be glad that you’re dad is helping u on customer service. Most bakeries would dream of that kind of help

If the client referral came from your dad then the clients would speak with your dad. It would be different if you sourced them yourself and they somehow decided to reach out to your dad. Instead of being flamed over it, be proactive. Reach out to them to make it right. Take that time to give them your contact info and tell them to contact you directly if there are any issues with future orders.

Listen, if your dad had no connection to these people they wouldn’t have said anything. They just wouldn’t have returned. Since your dad appears to have sent these people to you, they relayed the feedback to him in order not to hurt your feelings.

You just graduated a few months ago. You’re still learning. You should accept the feedback and use it as motivation to do better moving forward.

i did, and i messaged my aunt (the family member who bought the defective product) saying hey i got the message from my dad. please, next time just tell me if something is wrong, instead of telling my dad, i can take the constructive criticism feedback, because thats how i can grow and learn. my sincere apologies for the cookies that didn’t turn out correctly, you have 2 options, you can get a full refund or you can get anything in exchange for those cookies. please let me know, thank you. and im so sorry.

Your aunt? Is this yours dad’s sister? Dude she’s probably just more comfortable talking/complaining to her brother. That’s its. Full stop. Don’t over think it.

I think what’s most important is that you got the gift of feedback, don’t look a gift-horse in the mouth. You should be thankful and make sure they’re treated fantastic when they return (because the alternative is they never return)

Were they old people? Alot of times old people are stuck in their ways and only deal with who they think should be in charge.

They didn’t like what you made. End of. Your attitude to it is what’s bad, moreso than the cookies.
