Yes, a lot of people are leaving Square with the same concern. What exactly do you need the system to do for your point of sale functionality?
You know someone had a $20 in their pocket and was hoping by denying it you’d give the rest as tip.
That is your answer. Their processor should have turned off debit and either made a mistake or misinformed the client. I doubt this is entirely your vendor’s fault other than who they picked for their processing services.
Did they charge you a fee for using the card? Maybe they turned off debit for surcharge compliance purposes.
Payments professional of 15 years here. You are correct that you can likely lower your fees on an interchange plus model. However, the breakdown of the card brands isn’t enough data and Square won’t provide you with what you need.
Which features of Square you actually using? Just the payment device? The full POS? Any other apps such as employee clock in, payroll, etc?

Is this plan ironclad, in writing and with the buyout amount signed off on? I’ve seen a ton of posts where the kids think it is happening and when it comes to be that time the parents won’t give up the business.
If that is the case, sure you can ask for a raise from your dad. How far below market rate are you paying for the business in 2 years? That might be considered a deferred raise. If you are paying a hefty price, then it makes it easier to request a raise now.
You have to ask your bank. Some banks will do it and others won’t.

I’d see who your best performs under your ownership are and ask them for their opinions.
You are 3 years in and only hitting $10-20k in annual profit. Does this include your salary? I hope not. I am not sure that this is worth continuing.
What do you need besides basic invoices with a payment link?
Listen, if your dad had no connection to these people they wouldn’t have said anything. They just wouldn’t have returned. Since your dad appears to have sent these people to you, they relayed the feedback to him in order not to hurt your feelings.
You just graduated a few months ago. You’re still learning. You should accept the feedback and use it as motivation to do better moving forward.
Plenty of places have a group number that can receive texts. I don’t know if there may be HIPAA issues with some of them.
Why not use something that is integrated into your EHR/EMR system?
It is a book that a lot of people read and start asking questions about outsourcing everything. Is it possible? Sure. Is it remotely likely to work? Probably not.
When you say retail business, are people coming to your house to shop or is this just for your inventory? If it is in-person shopping I don’t really understand how you are supposed to have customers meet you there.
Got it. We do these systems all of the time for former Square users who perform service work such as plumbers, electricians, A/C, etc. Feel free to message me if you’d like to discuss specific solutions that will net your rate at 0%. If not, no worries.
