  • Don’t talk about it.

    Don’t hire friends and family.

I still get shit about not having a “real job” because I work from home. If they knew I’ve been a consultant for the last 8 years and make 4-6x what they make I’d get more shit.

There is currently us against them mentality when it comes to the “rich”. I’m the mentality in general was not helpful for many reasons this has come to include landlords and small business owners. I’ve spoken to a lot of people where they believe the market is a zero sum game. For me to win somebody else had to be lose therefore I am evil.

It’s nonsense and it’s why they will always remain poor.

  • I’d probably pay for it since she gave a lot more than necessary notice. I think it would be very likely that that generous notice might change rock the boat.

    This is a learning experience.

In the future when you pay for training for an employee that’s not company specific you should set up a contract where the training is free if they work for $x months otherwise they pay back a prorated amount based on the number of months they worked.

Keep in mind we should be training that benefits both the employee and the employer. I’ve had customers try to get me to discount my rates or not get paid for training some obscure product that I think is a fucking joke and the certification has no value to me. That shit don’t fly with me.

  • What I hear you saying is your time isn’t worth any money.

Don’t listen to the old people telling you that they’d go bang on doors, if they worked hard and sucked a lot of dick the company would take care of them.

They will chew you up and spit you out.

You really want to learn the ropes try to find a small company and get hired on as a junior programmer. It’ll be too small to siloed. They will abuse this shit out of you anyway. Get your 2 to 3 years in and then change jobs. Repeat until you’re making real money. They still treat you like shit but you’ll have money to show for it.

  • I flat out refuse to make introductions in almost all cases. I had one person blow up two of my fairly good vendor relationships because I made the introduction and they fucked around the vendor and eventually stiffed them.

Everything is purchased through me with 70-85% gross margin.

Id just say you can grab everything through me and if you purchase in bulk I’ll give you a volume discount. The rest isn’t in scope of the project so I’d just tell them it’s out of scope.

I had one client tried to go around me direct to the vendor and the vendor wouldn’t do business with them because they fucked around with payment too much. I had to come back and oh look my price is just went up.

  • I’m not trying to be a dick here but anything that takes 4 days and you only get $70 for is a hobby.

US fed Minimum wage = $7.2/h

    $7.2/h * 8h/day * 4 days = $230.40 PLUS materials.

If I were trying to price something like that it would be $800-900 for the time plus materials.

That’s without me knowing the skill level involved. If people won’t pay $800-900+ materials then it’s not a visible business.

  • So I’m going to take a more neutral stance on this one because this is written more like r/OffMyChest.

    What did he actually say?

I’m my experience sometimes people hear different things than what the person intended to communicate. There is a big difference between constructive criticism and outright trashing your work.

Is your business profitable? Are you making money or a least breaking even? This is important because it’s quite common for people to get caught up in a business and throw good money after bad. This can be a judgement call but is your business negatively impacting family finances?

    Can we see your products?
