I see a lot of brick-and-mortar businesses around me that don’t bother with a website, and if they have one it’s usually ancient. It seems like most of their activity is on social media, mainly Facebook.
Do you need a website or will a Facebook page suffice?

These are my favorite posts to respond to!

The short answer is a very enthusiastic yes. You need a website, but the style and how in-depth it goes depends entirely on the business. An e-commerce site is going to require something more complicated than a simple service based business like landscaping. Typically service based businesses can get away with one page websites that lists their info, about, pricing, etc.

You don’t own your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, NextDoor, Pinterest, or any other account and you’re most likely alienating a good portion of your potential client base (seriously, try finding the info you need before they ask you to log in or have to scour 800 images to find an outdated menu). Your access to these accounts can be revoked at any time for any reason. You don’t control the layout, the style or the information on third party pages. But with a website you do. With a website you control every aspect of your customers experience.

    YES.

Facebook is NOT your website. They can cancel, delete, ban, or reallocate your page. Your website should integrate with your social media, not the other way around.

I will go further: when looking for local businesses, I will not go to ones that only have a Facebook page. The FB only businesses rarely seem to bother with a clear statement of opening hours and how to contact them.

A good website is where all digital marketing campaigns lead to. Yes you need one. Google will give you one for free and you can have your own domain for $10-$12 per year so you don’t really have an excuse to not have one.

Also make sure to get your free google business profile also so you show up on search.

My biggest client was a brick and mortar store. We started selling their products online and they do millions every year on online sales alone. Do not underestimate the value of a good website.

I hate when a business only has Facebook. I removed facebook from my phone. If I can’t find the info I need from you, maybe your competition will do a better job.

I think that a website is crucial for any business in today’s world. First of all, it allows access to a wider market, as you are not restricted by the physical location of your store. Additionally, it is easier to promote your brand online. It is more adaptable and flexible to changes and advancements, which means you can quickly attract more customers by following new trends and meeting new customer demands.

Perhaps I’m going against the grain here, but: A Facebook page is fine. The conventional wisdom is that if you’re a business, you should have a web site. And generally speaking, a web site is a good thing, but only if it’s kept up-to-date, complies with security practices etc. It’s not a zero-cost option.

The important thing is that people can find you. Facebook is sufficient for that. It may not be “professional” and wouldn’t be sufficient for Apple or Coke or Ford, but for a small business, it’s fine IMHO.

There are some objections raised in the comments that are valid. Facebook’s terms and conditions may be unacceptable to you. They could potentially remove your site (or all sites) for whatever reason they choose, including bad ones. But that rarely happens, and if it does, you can set up a web site at that time. The same thing goes for Yelp etc. You can cross that bridge when you get to it.

But there are plenty of small businesses who never had a web page.

    I’m a web developer.

a Facebook page can’t rank on google for people searching for your services. Only a website can. And if they’re doin fine with just a Facebook then they can do even better with a website which will help make the slow periods not as slow and keep the leads coming in more consistently. Not everyone uses Facebook to find your services. And lots of people won’t call a business if they don’t have a website because anyone can make a Facebook page with little effort and buy followers. Making an actual good looking website takes effort and instills more trust in a brand. Facebook pages are for social validation. Websites are used to be found online. And ignoring a website is ignoring an entire market of customers who use websites to find your services. And if you’re doing well without a website it is just validation that what you do is in demand, valued, and sought after. A website will only amplify your current reach in the community and let people find you who don’t have Facebook or who doesn’t know anyone that has worked with you before to get a Referral. You can reach people who wouldn’t have found you otherwise. And that’s a client who can now refer you to other people and expand your already established referral network. A new website can’t hurt you. It can only help you in this situation. And if you want to retire at the end of it all, having a well established website that ranks well adds more value to your company and that’s more money you can ask for in your sale price. A website is an asset like any other tool or piece of machinery. And assets have value and bring value.

I think it all depends on your type of business, what products or services you offer.

It is true that most people are used to social networks but Facebook is often not the ideal network to start with, perhaps you should also create an Instagram page. People are using Instagram as if it were a search engine like Google.

In any case, it is not a bad idea to have your website since it adds professionalism to your business. If it is a business where you do not plan to constantly add content such as a blog, you can opt for a WordPress divi-type site. I hired on fiverr a not very expensive designer for my site and I was delighted, I’m going to leave you his gig here

And as mentioned before, the website can be optimized in a better way so that you appear in Google when they search for your business, however it is very difficult for a Facebook page to be indexed in the same way.

Having a Facebook page is no doubt beneficial, but having a website offers a dedicated space to present comprehensive information, showcases your brand distinctively, improves search engine visibility, and establishes credibility. It provides control, analytics, and personalized customer experience, which is essential for building a robust online presence and expanding beyond social media.

IMHO, a website is essential if you want to grow your business and work on your own brand and customization.

You should at least have a one-page site with info like hours, phone, and locations. You don’t have to spend a bunch of money.

A lot of people quit using Facebook. I find it to be unreliable source for business running. Maybe an additional, but not the main one.
