Hi All,

I have a company made and have its legal paperwork done so it is a legal company.

My business is providing web development and design on monthly basis.

So client wants a website no problem they pay $150 every month.

However problem comes is that lawyers are asking me outrageous amount of money to write a contract for me in terms of what will happen if they don’t pay the monthly fee in time or miss it and some other clauses.

My question is can I start without a contract in place and generate money so I can get one in future??

Or should I get one written from the get go??? Also if they are any alternatives let me know thanks!

My opinion: get it done via something that automatically charges the client on a monthly basis. Stay somehow in control of the site, if they fail to pay, you deactivate or take it down unless they continue the payment?

Use one of the many online law services that create contracts

Keep it simple and make sure exclusions etc are obvious. Having a contract I think is a must hit it doesn’t have to be complicated

I’m going to say something that will sound harsh, but my intention is not to be mean.

If you aren’t able to put together a simple small business contract without a lawyer, then running a small business may not be for you.

ETA: your business model is not viable. A flat monthly fee is a bad idea for a website. How would you answer if someone asked you to build and run Amazon for $150 per month.

You don’t need a contract. If they don’t pay you don’t continue the work. That’s it. If you can’t trust your client to pay then you get a deposit to cover missed payment. Enforcing the contract costs money too.

If you’re using Ryan’s model and system of web development, check out his subreddit, he shared is contract he uses a few days ago.
