  • I’m still thinking about how to phrase it. Part of me wants to just say that we’re too busy. Which is partially true. We are too busy to deal with her. She loves to suck up our time. Writes vague emails asking dozens of questions. Follows up with more questions for every answer. Gets on 2-hour long meetings where nothing is decided on her end. Nobody has time for that. She’s also threatened to replace us with a freelancer when she didn’t like a price on a proposal. Good luck lol. I’ve heard that before and it never goes anywhere. One person cannot replace the results that are derived by a team of dedicated on-staff experts. My job is to literally help her and if she doesn’t like the price there’s no reason to treat people this way

If I say we are too busy for her then it gives the indication of exclusivity, which I wouldn’t mind fostering that type of brand. In the future if she wants to expedite her marketing strategy or pay a premium for it then I’m happy to accommodate, but in my experience, people rarely change the way that they treat their vendors

  • I have a client that does laser treatments. What they do is holiday events that they host every year along with maybe one event every 2 or 3 months. They offer exclusive pricing at these events and also give bulk discounts for consecutive treatments, along with giveaways and raffle prizes and free drinks. But we hit pretty hard in both direct mail, email marketing, blog, writing for SEO and also socials for these events. Last I heard from them, they got over a 10x return on their advertising spend

My local chamber of commerce has a “women in business” group. If you can find something like that near you, you will probably find a lot of value in it. When I go to regular chamber events it seems like about half of the people there are women. Maybe I’m a bit biased, but I really don’t see it as a man’s world in that sense. There are many examples of women in my circle that have built their own business and have succeeded.

Some of my clients are women-owned businesses or franchises. I always thought that “business” itself expanded the scope of any type of gender-specific emotions or prejudices. Business is business and it’s impartial. If you’re a man leaning on the wrong values, you’re probably going to fail in most of your business partnerships. The same goes for women. It’s great to look deep inside yourself and try to escape your mundane life. But to be a successful business owner, you have to do what’s best for the business. Gender often doesn’t even become a topic or an underlying factor

There’s a few ways to go about doing this:

    1. Do it yourself with PowerPoint. I work in a marketing agency and my company makes these all the time for various companies and trade shows but they aren’t exactly foolproof. PowerPoint has a memory leak, so every 3 days you will need to restart it. Not the worst thing in the world but kind of a pain in the butt.

    2. Hire an AV company to install the monitor and schedule the media.

    3. Search in Google for “digital POS near me” and you’ll find a ton of companies that basically sell advertising space in retail locations. They may have a system where they can play something that pertains to your business as well. I think these are kind of a scam because you don’t want competitors playing in your location. And also, I think that the CPM metric is incredibly expensive and the reporting for these are terrible. It’s too much money. But as a person who hosts the board rather than someone who buys ad space on it, you probably get the best value.

    4. Like someone else in this thread said, you can run these 24/7 through a website that is basically designed just to play the videos on loop in a schedule. Kind of like a PowerPoint presentation, but without having to deal with that memory loss issue that I mentioned. Any web developer can do this, I have someone on staff that does stuff like this if you have any questions

  • I work at a marketing agency and every year we buy several thousand lead credits for a bulk discount from some software that we use. It’s B2B only. My partner is the one that actually uses it, I can’t remember the name of it but it’s not zoominfo. Some other generic sounding name. We use them for our client’s various campaigns. They seem happy with the quality

  • I do all of the marketing for a couple 3PL companies at my agency. The larger one does around $50M/yr in just 3PL services. Our strategy is centered on content creation. It all feeds not only into SEO but also adverts, email and social marketing. We are now adding case studies to the content calendar. So far it’s been doing great. Lots of new site visitors, growing much faster than expected. It helps when the budget is there

  • I’m a partner at a marketing agency. Our bread and butter is our client retention. They’ve stayed with us for long periods of time and we occasionally get referrals from them. Some of our clients have been with us for over 30 years. There’s a level of partnership that must be achieved to retain clients for that long. You must provide value to them. Real value, not skin-deep superficial value, but hard-hitting conversions.

Agency work is tough. There are daily challenges and you’ll always be having to reinvent yourself with clients. Just yesterday I had to explain how SEO works and how people don’t always start at the home page when visiting a website. This type of stuff can be very, very time consuming and not always billable.

I’m curious to know how those lead suppliers work for you. I get emails from them every single day. We actually have our own B2B lead database subscription that we utilize for clients, we haven’t tried using it for ourselves, but it’s always been an option.

We are constantly swinging between wanting business growth, yet being too busy with the day-to-day to pick up the phone and put in the work to call leads. It’s an issue that will not be resolved soon. But it’s not a dire need at the moment
