My home is going to need a bunch of new plumbing and I agreed to help pay for a home aide for my mother.

The only thing I can do to cover the expenses is get new clients.

I’ve been running on regulars and word of mouth for years, so I need help. Located in Tampa, if that matters.

    Our town has a local Facebook site that lets us post on and it’s free … has worked much better than any other advertising

    First and easiest thing to do is to upsell package deals to your existing customers. Assuming you have their contact details. And this is the holiday season and everyone wants to look good. You can offer them some nice package deals where they spend more in total but they still feel they get a good deal. You can also offer gift cards - a mani/pedi package (or something similar) would make an excellent holiday gift for example.

    Another thing you can offer to existing customers is salon grade beauty care products. Instead of just selling individual bottles, offer gift packages by simply bundling 2-3 bottles in a nice gift package - they would make excellent gifts.

    Hi, fellow stylist. Implement a referral discount. (10% off client who refers and referred new guest. This has worked stupendously for me in the past. Positive of this is you’re building clientele based off of already loyal clientele so they’re more likely to be decent. Also, consider finding a way to build your social media presence and post everyday.

    Reviews, testimonials ASAP. How do your socials look? You need excellent quality photos (easy with newish phones) of the finished color/cut/style—even better when the happy client posts it, or if you do it in-house, ask them if you can tag them.

    Is there a larger high school nearby? If you have a high schooler in your life, ask them to help you find a … I don’t know the proper term, but kind of a micro influencer type thing. Give a girl and/or guy a great haircut free or cheap if you can swing it, and in exchange, they’ll talk you up at school. I’m out of the high school age scene now, so this might be outdated info (if so, sorry).

    Give away a free cut in local fundraiser/charity. A lot of time you can get some free mentions by other people in media/social media, and when others talk your biz up, it counts for more in a lot of consumers’ eyes.

    Post helpful info on your socials regarding common questions or concerns in haircare. If people see you as a source of info or an expert, they’re more likely to trust you, which often translates into them buying from you.

    Can you offer mobile/offsite cuts? Some people *are* actually that busy, and if you can ease a pain point, you’ll get their money easier.

    If you’re in a location close to other businesses, go around when you can and meet the other owners and employees. People really do like to support people they feel like they know.

    Try posting some TikTok’s with your work and results if clients would like it. Maybe offer a discounted haircut to try something outside your typical cuts?

    1. Make sure your Google Business Profile is complete, including services, products, etc.
    2. Ask clients to leave reviews on your GBP and/or any other platforms you’ve created listings on.

    Are you high end or affordable? If you’re the affordable kind of salon, the pennysaver is always a safe bet to attract older clientel. If you’re high-end, you could set a day aside to host a class on at-home hairstyles for DIY people, if you wanted you could have a small cover fee and offer drinks and make it a semi-social event. People will remember having a good time at your salon and certainly return, though it depends on your area.

    How long have you been in operation? That will also affect the ways you can market.

    It does not get immediate results often, but ask your clients to leave a Google review. Google bases non paid ads on ratings. If your salon is rated the highest it will be first under the sponsored ads. Be sure to respond to every review left!
