  • This is like a forest of RED FLAGS for you.

He doesn’t have the capability to raise capital. He has probably given you an ‘edited’ version of events.

No one with that many contacts/business savvy is going to go into a full partnership with a newly minted person who has no idea what is going on.

Tell him you have to wait until the bankruptcy is finalized, if you aren’t strong enough to give a hard no.

I bet a 10 imaginary internet points that his house/home is in foreclosure and that his personal credit cards are maxxed out.

It’s kinda like having a 60 year old guy trying to woo someone in high school. I love you, I really do, see all my cool stuff. Never mind my three ex-wives, they just didn’t get me. SEE MY COOL STUFF!!!

  • " Ie, if I open a 501©(3) or something similar and get paid through that can I set the money aside for my child’s college fund (I’m not interested in setting up a 529 account)"

omg. let him hire someone else to get involved in his tax dodge scheme. don’t work under the table or anything like that.

bookkeepers/accountants can be liable for tax dodge schemes if they do the bookkeeping for them. (see lawsuit involving past president, children, and all the accountants/cfos/etc)

  • You need to give them a quote before you start work.

I think that you are undercharging at 70 for an original composition. If you are looking at Etsy as a price guide, keep in mind that many people undercharge there for original art.

“I do all different kinds, whatever speaks to me that day I guess, from landscapes, to cartoons, to festive art.”

O.o I don’t think your family appreciates how talented you are. :)

  • You can usually book an appointment with a CPA to find out what taxes you need to pay. Your city or state probably has a phone line to call.

Whether or not you want to incorporation (LLC, S Corp, C Corp) may depend on a number of factors. The filing fees can be high for some entities. I think in CA, there is an annual $800 fee for filing as an LLC. So you might want to do some research. A sole prop is also a valid business entity.

Those people who say ‘you don’t have to pay taxes’ are strange. Like, I have no idea which city or state you are in and know absolutely nothing about your tax situation. That’s like saying you should wear a french braid in your hair everyday, when I don’t know anything about your personal style or even if you have hair. LOL

There are different reporting requirements for each city/state/federal taxes. In almost every state there are sales taxes that you are also required to collect. If you end up hiring people, there would also be payroll taxes.

That’s why you need to talk to a tax expert that’s familiar with your area, business type, and you get along with. :)
