  • It’s common. And it’s not going to change, and will get worse the more successful you get. It’s rare anyone not in business to understand how it works.

Just wait till your sibling decides to start the same business. The feeling of betrayal would be immense. And you also have a friend coming in, that’s a possibility as well.

The issue is, people think that you just show up and do nothing to make the money. The people who actually are in the game know how hard it is to work through all this- managing to get new clients, managing finances payroll and so on.

The solution? Get a thick skin, and stay humble. No bragging, or sharing your plans with anyone. Just keep your head down, work hard and when you make bank, make sure you have fun with it as well. That Porsche isn’t gonna drive itself.

  • Commitment. Responsibility. And knowing that there’s no one to hide behind or run to to make a decision. Your decisions are what sets things in motion and that’s scary af.

Making a wrong decision and having everything that your family has built essentially burn to the ground. Destroying their reputation and life and their hard work, and maybe their retirement plans as well.

Also ask in r/familybusiness. Its a community for people in family business.

  • You would be the owner on paper? Sounds very pandora paperslike - this is usually done for business that are shady or to create a complex web of businesses to hide the true ownership.

If your friend does something shady using the Business, you could be on the hook for it. If it goes bankrupt and it’s not a llc, you’re liable to pay.

In the eyes of the law, you are the owner. So everything will come to you.

Hard pass. Please say no politely.

  • BS your way through it. Throw in a bunch of jargon that’s no way connected to it, make it seem extra confusing. And say you don’t know or need to check or something else in the same vein.

Anyways, if you’ve figured it out, there exists the chance someone else will. You don’t need to help him anyways, you’re not obligated to create a competitor. Just make sure that he doesn’t poach any employees from you. And don’t give him a job either.

    Hey OP

You’ve got a family business. That’s a good starting point. And you’ve got a background in software engineering, which is fantastic.

    My advice:

    • work in your family business for a year or so, and learn everything you can.
    • create systems, start to delegate work to others and try to shift to digital payment modes.
    • around the same time, hire people to help you with your YouTube. You have the resources, and you can use that to grow your business and YouTube.

Now, YouTube has a lot of potential, but why would you lose the gold you have now in favor of a potential diamond? Not to mention- you really won’t be able to work 3 hours a day in any other job, why would you expect that in here?

In the initial phases your work will be harder. But don’t mind it, once you learn everything, it’ll get easier. And even if you don’t have passion for it, you can still build a good business- a lot of it is about hard work.
