Without writing a small story I’m trying to justify using a led gen agency but they all give the same vibes as SEO agencies from 10 years ago did (promise the world and deliver… not much).

We’ve done it ourselves, with some success but don’t have the time to spend doing it. While it might be more cost-effective to hire someone to do it, we feel using an agency is a good way to test it out for a few months without committing to paying and managing an FTE.

So, Lead gen agencies: how did you find them?..

  • did they generate any leads?
  • increase in traffic to your product?
  • did they need micro managing?
  • As the title said, has anyone ever used a led gen agency?

not first hand - but this is from 3 startups that i advise, all used lead gen companies, none were happy with the results, all different locations -

    1. 1 cancelled then had the lead gen company sue them for unpaid because they terminated before contract, the result delivered was 1 bad lead
    2. 1 got loads of leads, none converted, and the ‘wrong number’ ‘i didn’t regster for this’ was like 75%
    3. 1 got leads, closed some, but basically worked out more expensive than just getting a linkedin sales navigator automation setup.

Thanks for sharing. This sums up what I’m worried about.

For us #2 would be the nightmare scenario, you get loads of leads and you spend time following up with each one, only for none of them to go anywhere, you’ve spent a few thousand and burnt loads of time (which is what you were trying to avoid doing in the first place)

All they do is take a list from seamless or another site then use mailchimp or similar site to send out mass mailers using some copy they made. Basically the same thing every spammer does.

If you have a company/product thats easy for them to build copy and easy for them to prospect and easy for prospects to want then it works great, but missing any of those means you need to manage or its poor results.

Lets break it down. Seamless is a couple grand for unlimited, mailchimp a couple hundred and a couple hundred for someone to make good copy. All in well under $5000. There’s not much value add for a lead gen agency and likely they use the same list prebuilt for all types of businesses similar to yours.

I hate the cold emails that land in my inbox every day.

They start with an insincere compliment: “I’ve been following you for 6 months and have been really impressed with your business so decided to reach out”

Then a pivot into a random sales pitch.

The first company that did this May have got results, but when you get 5 a day with the same format…

I block the sender and report as spam to try and keep them out of my inbox.

It would be great if there was an anti B2B marketing lead gen agency AI that could filter this trash out of my inbox.
