I own a very new, very small business selling underboob sweat protectors.
This morning I posted an offer on my page. It wasn’t a big offer but it was a saving. We’re talking a £1 saving here. Trust me, that’s important information.
I get a comment on my offer: “if you can afford to post offers like that, why don’t you just drop your prices? 🙄”
I’m horrified. I don’t understand what the motivation was behind it… I don’t think my prices are unreasonable at all and I’m not sure why someone would say that?
Under boob sweat protection? You cannot be serious
I worked in retail, how many times did I hear “no price in the computer? So then it’s free?” “Almost closing time? It should be half price” Customers can really act like idiots, you don’t have to respond when they are acting like that
“No price in the computer…” Is exclusively said by adults over +70 years old 😆
Those are just lame jokes that have been around since cash registers were invented. Not everything is meant to be taken so literally.
I own an auto repair shop. If I had a dollar for every time some clown tells me that his neighbor will do a job way cheaper, I would retire. It is very satisfying when they call me for help after their neighbor messes up their car and walks away which is a pretty regular occurrence as well.
This comment was G-rated at worse, and definitely not something to be “shaken” about, much less to your “core”. Every small business will have push back and every owner will eventually have to deal with a bad customer. I suggest you cut the dramatics and come up with a plan on how you’re going to react to things like this in the future. This is part of owning a business.
Delete and block. That person has issues that don’t have anything to do with you!
If they are sold individually it’s a 2 pound saving
If it was Facebook then it’s because 90% of Facebook users are old, bitter people. Don’t sweat it.
Just delete the comment and move on. There’s always going to be haters. People like that don’t understand how ecommerce works.
I run ads to a $47 marketing course on ChatGPT. Ha, some of the comments… honestly, they kind of ruin my day. It’s frustrating, but I also get that…
- lots of scepticism in my industry (online business/ marketing)
- people are in weird moods
- it’s super easy to just quickly write an annoyed comment on a post/ ad and move on with your day
If they’re just being assholes (omg anyone teaching AI or marketing is a scammer), I delete.
If there’s a genuine way for me to respond, or I get where they’re coming from, I respond.
With an eyeroll emoji, they’re just being a dick haha. Delete and move on ;)
What’s the title of the course? How to scam suckers out of $47 over some nonsense you can learn for free from a million vetted sources online?
They are being a twat, but I do worry. If this shakes you to your core, your going to get obliterated in the future because this isn’t anywhere near the worst thing you’ll see as a business owner. Just block and realize some people are miserable with their life.
Ignore these people. Price your goods to make money, that’s why you started the business isn’t it?
People will bitch and moan about everything.
If you feel it necessary to respond to people like this you can also explain that discounts like this aren’t sustainable you are doing promotion to advertise the product and get repeat customers that will allow you to make up any losses from the promotion. That’s literally what promotions are for.
If folks aren’t complaining about prices, your prices are too low. Take it as a compliment.
There’s always one miserable git with too much time and highspeed internet!
Make them feel stupid.
“I can’t afford to drop the price, the offer is a form of advertising to get new customers to explore my product and hopefully tell others how it has benefitted them. The 1 pound savings is coming from my budget and is a temporary loss to hopefully increase sales overall”
Somehow, people have this idea that business owners should provide products and services without profiting. It’s not communism, not even sure that this type of thought has a name, but it’s just mindblowing to me the entitlement. Comments like that should just be ignored and don’t deserve a response in all reality.
You do you, and don’t let it get to you.
Don’t do this, OP. You’ll look like an amateur and an asshole to other customers. Be an adult, ignore the comment and move on. Engaging with dickheads in the comment section, especially over nothing comments like this one, is a great way to tank both your brand and reputation in just a few seconds.
Ignore this person. I bet you didn’t get this worked up about the 100 good comments you have received before this. These people exist and love being able to make these comments, but you can also just continue to run your business how need to, and focus on selling to customers who actually are going to purchase your product.
