In the future, use the rule of 3.
- 1st time it happens, I send them an email or just mention it.
- 2nd time, we do a more serious meeting. I try to figure out why this happened and if there is anything I can o to help. Also let them know that if this happens again, that’s it.
- 3rd time it happens, I will fire them. They’ll know at this point.
When it comes to the actual firing, get it over with right away. Don’t package it in or do a compliment sandwich. “The reason I asked to talk with you today, is because I have to let you go. The reason for this decision is that…”
Let them know what will happen next and if they have any questions or need anything, they can contact you.
It sucks to fire people, but remember that you are probably doing them a favor as well. For whatever reason, this person doesn’t fit it and will be better served a place where they do.
Sometimes, you just gotta take a step back and ask: “What is the most simple and direct path to my goal”. We have a tendency to overcomplicate things and look for new shiny solutions. I have fallen into that traps so many times and it can become very costly.
