Double or triple the price

May I make an alternate suggestion. Start your organic farm or garden but sell the produce on a subscription basis. That is, your subscribers pay $40 a week for enough produce to feed a family of 4. You grow the food and deliver it in boxes to subscribers’ homes. Of course this is only a suggestion, price and quantity would be up to you and your customers.

The advantage to you is you have a steady income stream and you know in advance how much of everything you need to grow. The advantage to your customers is they get lots of fresh organic produce at a good price.

If you have a surplus you can sell it at a roadside stand or, start a restaurant.

I would leave the restaurant idea for last because it is the most costly, labor intensive, and riskiest part of the venture.

Heard of a guy who leases those credit card/debit card terminals stores use. It took him a couple of years to get enough customers but once he had a few thousand out there at $39 a month he was rolling in money.

Don’t think of it as firing someone. Think of it as saving everyone else. The health of the firm demands it. Too bad, let them down as easy as you can, but they have to go.

You should watch “Up In The Air” a movie about a guy who fires people for a living. You might even get his speech by heart.

You have been misinformed. Many entrepreneurs had a social conscience and did good in the world. Even Rockefeller. While he ran Standard Oil he brought the price of kerosene down from $1 a gallon to 6 cents. Many people around the world benefited. He also gave away millions to education and charity. I know it is fashionable to think he was some kind of monster, he wasn’t. Suggest you read “Titan” for more information.

There are plenty of other examples I only mentioned him because you did.

I thought Microsoft would never make money in the software business. All the computer nerds I knew would pirate software and pass it around, I didn’t think they would sell enough to make any money. I was wrong.

Tesla cars. Making cars is a very tough competitive business. Hundreds of companies have failed, some run by very smart guys. I was surprised they ever go into production, surprised they lasted more than a year or 2, surprised they have not been overtaken by old established companies like Ford and Toyota getting into electric cars, surprised they are still in business and making a profit. I know they get criticized for quality control glitches but it is amazing they can produce a car as good as they do.

Even better, go to work for the government, take off the maximum holidays and sick days, spend the rest of the time sitting on your ass with your feet up on the desk and retire at 55 with a fat pension, meanwhile complaining all the way about how hard you work and how badly you are paid.

I didn’t do this but my brother did. He was right.
