I’ve actually had success doing this but not on purpose. I joined as employee number 13 at a company that now has about 1500 employees and made a good amount of money after it went public.
I did the same thing again, as employee number 16 at another company and got consistently promoted just cause I was “the guy that’s been around a while” until I was at director level (note: this only took around 7 years, so not as bad as OP makes it sound)
So actually, while this is a joke, it can work. Get in early at a startup and ride the wave.
