Hi everyone.

I have a small construction business -Ontario with 10 employees. 3 of us in the office. One of the people in the office has to take a few months off for a surgery. She is looking for a top up on her wage. Why should or shouldn’t I top it up? We’ve never topped up EI before and I don’t plan on it now. I have offered to loan her money if she is in that bad of a situation. I think if people are concerned about this they should buy themselves disability insurance. Why am I working hard to pay for people to be off. Thoughts?

I’d look at how critical she is for your business going forward. For people who are too important to lose, you should give more consideration to their requests, even if it costs you unfairly in the short term.
