I have an appliance repair business. I charge for labor and parts. I mark up my parts a flat percentage. How do I respond when a customer wants me to breakdown the cost of labor vs parts? Because I know what they are really trying to do is see if they can find the part cheaper on the internet.

it is possible that you mark up the parts because a) you used a sales tax id and you get a small 15% or so discount. so if you take the retail price of the parts - which you will get when you do the quote and add 25% to that (you went to pick up the parts etc - gas time) then you should get to a parts price.

depending on the complexity - you should not have “customer” bring you the parts - because at the end of the day – they expect a warranty …how you gonna warranty something u did not provide — you see this starts a long conversation
