I am prepping for my first networking event after switching careers into Bookkeeping. I could use some help. I am trying to figure out how to respond/approach questions related to how much Bookkeeping experience I have, like “How long have you been in business?” What is your niche" etc. I am trying to figure out a way to acknowledge my lack of experience in a humble way while also avoiding being dismissed for potential referrals. So far, my approach is to acknowledge that I just moved into the space but draw on my previous career experience to ensure good service/results to my clients. What has worked for you?

What was your previous career experience?

I think your approach is sound. Anything you can draw on from an attitude and habits category that aligns with attitude and habits that a ‘bookkeeper’ is perceived to need will be helpful. Such as, attention to detail.

To avoid specific tip offs, you can say something like “yea, back when I was doing x I started to realize I had a higher level of attention for detail than others. That combined with my love of numbers led me to moving into bookkeeping.” You might also want to weave into that story something about integrity.

Like I said, the approach is right but it will all be in the details.
