So I m a graduate student who isn’t so passionate about what he s studied and also isn’t interested in working so long for another company. So I would like to start an online business that to do alongside a job until I see that it’s worth it to quit.

IYO, what are some online businesses to start learning that are still worth it?

Thank you

Absolutely nobody knows the answer to this question because with the rise of large language models the landscape is in flux and heads are rolling in every industry.

One of first things to consider going into small business is notion of best fit.

“…isn’t so passionate about what he s studied and also isn’t interested in working so long for another company.”

So, what are you passionate about and what type of work would you be interested in (i.e. product or service).

Small business has better chance of success when characteristics of owner are good match with requirements of business model.

For example, if you are introvert, self-centered, and place a premium on alone time, owning and operating a sports bar would not be a best fit.

I would focus on learning fundamental skills rather than any one business. Marketing and advertising are super powerful skills that will give you an edge no matter what you decide to do.

And the best way to do that is to learn from examples. Learning from examples will also give you exposure to different businesses and business models.

Youtube is full of hype when it comes to marketing, but here are a couple of newsletters that I would recommend instead. This one focusses on marketing in general, and this one more on advertising and crafting creative campaigns. Both are great. Good luck

The biggest issue with any of this…is who is running it and what are his or her positives or negatives. As to what businesses to open, that wouldn’t be made avail its very valuable. I’m working on something to set up people in the states, that will require a setup fee…this isntmfor the lazy.

Do you currently have any tech skills? What did you major in? Do you have any specific topics you are passionate about?
