Just a few days have passed since the OpenAI developer conference wrapped up, and it’s been a lot to take in. OpenAI dropped a slew of updates that could seriously rewire the tech scene we thought we knew.

As I watched the unveilings, my mind went straight to the founders I’ve crossed paths with over the years—bright minds crafting niche solutions atop OpenAI’s expanding ecosystem. It got me thinking about the implications, challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead for them.

With my fair share of startup scars and lessons learned, I penned down an article that lays out my perspective on these latest developments and what they could mean for those hustling in the AI trenches.

TLDR: OpenAI’s ChatGPT now summarizes PDFs, a major step forward that could centralize AI innovation with big tech, potentially sidelining smaller AI startups. As the AI narrative shifts, startups must rethink their reliance on single platforms and instead innovate independently to remain competitive. The OpenAI developer event introduced GPT-4 Turbo and other tools, offering startups new opportunities for growth but also challenges in a giant-dominated market. The successful startups will be those that use AI as a tool to enhance user experiences and tackle broader societal issues, not just as a product.

It’s a company, hence there is no endgame. They will invest in new technology. Once AI is already mature, they will have a new technology that they bet in.
