  • I tried YC cofounder matching. Not super enthusiastic about it though. Nr of people that sign on and are regularly engaged is limited. When you do meet someone there always seems to be some kind of story going on. Someone who got booted from his own startup for example. Or just a wannabe in genera

In the end talented people are just super rare I guess

  • I’m happy to share, I worked at a few big and small software companies and I have my own now; mind you my experience is mainly b2b

I’d say 90% of cost at a software company is people. Unless you’re doing something very high tech, but normally it’s people. Marketing costs generally should be quite low (events mainly). Office space is not cheap but also not a huge cost

Then in the beginning it’s mainly tech. I’ve seen companies up to 50 people with 60% tech.

Once you have product market fit you start investing in marketing and sales. Once established it’s not weird to have 25% tech and the rest in other functions

A variable is consultancy and support. This depends on your market. In b2b this will also be quite sizable eg 25%. Unless you outsource it

    Supporting roles about 10%.

Everything depends on these numbers. Just multiply nr of people by cost per person (annual salary plus 25%) and you have a good estimate

  • I think the ideas still apply. I have a b2b software startup in a niche market so obviously I can’t rely on data. Still there is so much you can do. I sold the product with a frontend-only prototype. We had signed letters of intent before we had the prototype. We interviewed over 50 potential clients.

For user experience we do live video recording of clients using the app. We also monitor login behavior etc .

The key is that you need less than you think. I know a guy who signed his first 100k deal based on a promise.

  • Agree with all the others; you need a reality check

One thing stood out to me; if you prefer to receive a check instead of finding a CTO why do you think hiring someone will get you better results? Employees will be less committed if anything and without the right technical background you’ll have a very difficult time leading them

If you can’t work with any CTO you should consider what’s wrong (and it might be you)
