Im attempting to start a T-shirt side business and I want to make custom designs to press on my shirts. I found someone that sells transfer papers but i have conflicting sources regarding which printer i can use for the transfers. I found a canon printer that said on their website it supports the paper but the seller told me it wont work for transfers. Online search says any inkjet printer works, but again the sellers say differently. Anyone got any experience with this?

What type of transfer? Dye sublimation? Or just using heat transfer paper (great for personal use, horrible as a product you sell).

DTG or DTV are good professional options but they require expensive specialized equipment.

Dye sublimation is amazing but only works on polyester.

Do not make them yourself they will be horrible. Just buy pro transfers from supacolor or stahls by uploading the artwork.

As someone who does this as a hobby, I’d first start with researching the different types of heat transfers and what printers each require. Nine times out of 10, your standard home office printer won’t be able to handle the type of prints you’re thinking about… there are certain home office printers you can convert or specific printers you can buy that have the ability to print sublimation transfers but even they can only be pressed into specific apparel. There’s tons of resources out there; it just takes a lot of research & learning to be successful in the custom t-shirt/apparel industry. Also, you can’t use someone else’s artwork for t-shirts unless you pay for it or they give you permission. Designing your own art for apparel is an entirely different discussion about software, graphics, etc… good luck to you though! 😊
