I just started my business and had my first customer ask for a w-9. The work was for $1,200.

Is this normal? How do I get/ send the W9? What does this mean for me?

They are asking for a document that shows your tax id! You could probably download one and fill it in. Has your address and tax id

Completely normal business practice. Businesses need to know what info goes onto tax forms at the end of the year (or if it’s even necessary). Just google form w9 and fill it out, it just needs like 3 fields to be filled in

This is normal if you are working as a sub for a GC. A private homeowner customer is not entitled to this information. I will show them my COI for Liability Insurance, but they do not need to know anything else.

    Lots of correct answers here.

In summation it’s just the form you give them (filled out) so they can send you a 1099 at the end of the year. You can download directly from the IRS website. I like to fill one out in Adobe and save as a PDF and that way when people ask for it I just have to attach it to an email and send- takes maybe 20 seconds.

I guess it’s kind of industry dependent, but I always send my clients a W9 with my contract. If I don’t, they always send one for me to fill out anyway. You’ll want to do this to make sure they send you a 1099 come tax time and you claim things correctly
