Hey folks, I’m looking at starting a business in the DevOps consulting and managed services space. It’s a market that’s getting reasonably busy, but there’s lots of folks out there who do it in a way that’s just pure volume and not a value add to other businesses.

I’m coming from a pre-existing company, leading that sort of discipline but I’d like to go into business for myself. However, given it’s a service and consulting, there’s nothing tangible upfront. I don’t presently have any customers, but I’d like to target small and medium businesses looking for experts to manage their cloud estate.

My question really is, how do you get started in sales from nothing, offering a service that would likely charge a monthly fee?

Referrals and networking one by one. Don’t even bother with anything else until you’ve exhausted this first and have a few clients.

Side note: startup forums are not going to be the best place to find a lot of consulting advice and service design experts. Those are very well established sectors with lots of support and resources. It’s not a startup. I don’t meant to be pedantic about the word startup. Just want to make sure you’re looking in the best places for expertise that will help you succeed.
