I’m currently employed as a security guard at a beach resort, earning $17 per hour. While my job involves monitoring the premises from a security booth, my real passions lie in UX/UI design and physical fitness.
Over time, I’ve developed skills in creating no-code websites and designing webpage templates using Figma. My job, thankfully, allows me some flexibility, enabling me to work on these digital projects during my shifts.
Additionally, I’ve committed myself to a rigorous fitness regime. For the past six months, I’ve been waking up at 3:50 AM for fasted weightlifting sessions. However, I’ve recently encountered a setback, recovering from an injury sustained while bench-pressing.
Here’s where I need your insights: I’m eager to transition into doing UX/UI design full-time. I believe in adapting physical practices to build mental resilience, preparing myself for the entrepreneurial journey ahead.
I’ve been influenced by the common portrayal of entrepreneurship as a path to luxury homes, flashy cars, and dating supermodels. However, I’m more grounded. I view entrepreneurship as my only option, a necessity rather than a choice. In my mind, it’s a do-or-die situation.
But I wonder, is this mindset conducive to long-term success in building a business that generates millions? Or is it insufficient to sustain me through the inevitable challenges ahead?

No, a do-or-die mindset is not conducive to success, its a recipe for insane risk taking and self-delusion. If you want to do UX contracting you don’t need to quit your job, and you are sacrificing your mental health and UX skills if you are getting less than 7 hours of sleep a night. Simply build a good portfolio and work on finding a client or two for some part time work after work, then build your client list over time until you make enough money that you can quit your job. This is a very common and possible career path, I did a similar thing myself.
