I have a general idea on how you start a business in software but zero experience or knowledge on how you start a business that sells physical products.

In my spare time I want to devote some time and money to creating and selling a physical product with the core aim to expand my knowledge in that area and not to get rich.

Parts I know;

Create a legally sound / official company

Adhear to regulation and taxation

Create a e-commerce website or/and leverage existing ones

HR

Parts I don’t know;

Copyright - do I need to copyright the idea even though it’s not ground breaking? Example could be a bag to carry a keyboard or a wristband to attach wedding ring to, anyone can come up with that, so can that be copyrighted or does it need copyrighting?

Creating a prototype - I can’t do this as I lack tools and materials, do I submit plans and have a prototype made to specification by a company? What stops them taking the idea and do they only accept specific cad plans? Or will they work with me?

Picking a manufacturer - do I just send them the plans of the product and they will produce it? How do you find one that will produce your specific product? and if it’s China based do I just cross my fingers the concept isn’t taken and sold elsewhere by another company?

The product I’m thinking of will be like the release of aluminium / reusable water bottles, so once it’s out there anyone and everyone with more resources and bigger userbases can create and sell their own versions and take over the market. So how do you avoid that?
