How much would it cost to own an app?

I’m not a tech savvy person so excuse my ignorance

I googled “how much would it cost to own an app?” And was surprised by the answer, “The minimum app development cost is $5,000-$10,000. A more complex mobile application will cost you around $50,000-$75,000 and reach $300,000+.”

Seriously why is the bar so high?

Ex: a local barber cuts ~500 people’s hair a month, and he wants an app to book appointments, but he can’t afford the $5k-$10k for that then what are his options?

No one is installing a custom app from their local barber tobook an appointment.

Your local barber wants an online booking engine like that let’s customer book appointments from a variety of platforms into a single calendar.

There are plenty of options out there but I sourced this one a while ago for a client with similar needs.

How much is the bread you eat? Or the car you drive? Everything has a price tag. The bar is not high enough.

Keep in mind - not every business needs custom software. Your barber should look for an off-the-shelf solution. There are plenty of software as a service providers for most of the things you need nowadays.

You don’t need an app for that, you need a booking software. You’re going to pay a monthly fee and they spend thousands building it

That cost is probably for a super custom app buil from scratch. Not every app works that way. You can build “white label” apps with very simple functionality for a fraction of that cost. Or even make a mobile wrapper from s website that behaves like an app. Check out Go High Levels marketing platform, they include a white label app.

It really depends on a lot of factors. There are so many hidden costs and it’s really not one size fits all. Even things such as trademarks or legal etc. I did mine for about $15k and I got 85% of what I wanted.

Could he simply not use Calendly? I think it’s free and even if it isn’t the premium cost will probably be far lower than a custom app

you can start from setting up a website with Calendly or Google workspace account, unless you have a need to upkeep an app, a website is will be a lower entry point that solve your problem here
