It seems like every startup nowadays has a landing page that looks like Linear - dark mode, frosted glass components using blurs, outer space background, lots of gradients, etc.

I actually like this aesthetic, but when every single startup landing page looks the same, it quickly becomes boring. What do you all think? What are your favorite landing pages that don’t follow this aesthetic?

One of the things we are not embracing here is what is the risk of taking a contrarian view? Say as a marketer you spent $100k on building and designing a completely contrarian looking site - what if it bombs? Who’s the blame - your job on the line. The same thing goes for most industrial grade decisions.

As about likeability in consumers - asking preferences for consumers is never a binary thing, If you ask for what do you like most - more often than not it’s short term memory you are leaning into. What do you recall when someone asks you that question ?

People tend to copy the market leaders. When Google was the trendy startup, people copied it, same for Facebook, and in the last decade Stripe and Uber were trendy so people copied them

Yes - and I have been asked to design and build one that looks exactly like one of these new ones with purple and gradients all over.

    What would you do differently?

Not sure I have a favourite landing page but the ones that have stood out to me definitely had something humorous on there. I remember the pages who make me laugh (or at least smile)

I dont mind similar structure but yes aesthetics tend to trend every few years. Remember the early web2 “glass effect” trend where everything had reflections and shine?

It’s just a trend, or “fashion” - the same like wearing beards, green color clothes or red lipstick etc. A few years ago you could probably say all startup landing pages are in the neumorphism style. Next year the trend will change and you see the difference.
