Hi everyone, I keep thinking about how to proceed in the following week regarding the first invoice I will send to a new client and how to proceed with a collaborator’s daily rate renegotiation.
Context: I (experienced dev) got in contact with a local business owner to digitalize his business. He seemed flexible related to the costs as long as it’s not a rip off. He worked with software companies before.
For this I reached out to a skilled Product designer/Ux/Ui I know to kick start the project ASAP and get the deal. The thing is, that the daily rate is 3$ higher/hour than the rate I agreed with the client. Until now I am paying out of my own pocket all the expenses.
I really need some ideas here on how to proceed with the first invoice since the first version is done:
1.How would you plan on wrapping my working hours? I have written some detailed notes on what i have spent time on 2.How would you pitch that the product design costs that much? Should I “mask it” in some development timp? 3.And last question, how would you tackle a rate renegociation (current ontract ends in December) with the product designer since I agreed the first price I was asked to get things going asap, rockie mistake.
Looking forward to some tips. Have a great one!
For your first invoice, transparently detail the hours you spent on different tasks. Be honest about the time invested in development and highlight the value you’ve provided.
When explaining the product design costs, emphasize its crucial role in enhancing user experience and overall project success. Clearly outline the benefits and impact of the designer’s work.
Approach the rate renegotiation with the product designer openly. Share your budget constraints, express the value of their contribution, and discuss a rate adjustment that aligns with the project’s financial dynamics.I wouldn’t “mask” the product design costs, clear, honest communication is important.
