How long does it take you to properly recaulk a bathtub or shower, 100% silicone, removingnall caulk/grout, degreasing caulk lines, and making it look perfect, with a mix of removing caulk and hard grout?

Do you charge per hour, even if the customer is talking to you, you have to go to the truck to get another tool, etc? Do you deduct time texting other clients, going back to the truck to grab a tool, not being ablemto find a tool, changing music on phone, scheduling or looking at new projects with your customer, etc?

Below is my notes on the times and tasks. Note 0:33 is 33 minutes. I charge $85/hr so subtracting looking for tools and texting other customers the cost to recaulk one bathtub surround, one countertop, and nail baseboard with sparkling holes, along with talking to customer viewing projects they want done, etc is roughly $855 labor only.

First day from arrival to leaving was 3:20 (3 hours, 20 mins.) Customer talked a lot about other projects and jobs. Removed caulk and grout from tub surround and countertop in 1 hour 36 mins.

Second day from arrival to leaving was 9 hours. Customer talked a lot, discussed when to recaulk 2nd bathroom, scheduled projects for other houses they own, looked at other repairs needed, advised them about caulk needing 24 hours to cure. Time to caulk tub and countertop was 5 hous and 45 minutes. Redid a few areas a couple times, had trouble in corners. I used profiling tools, cleaned with mineral oil, did not spray soap/water andndidnt use my fingers as this customer wants it down 100% correctly. They are also anal so I made sure there was very little blemishes.

Below is detailed task times:

Task times: 1:00 get supplies are hardware store, drive to customers house. 0:15 packed in most tools 0:33 cleaned crusty and soap scummed joints and dusty baseboards. Put drop cloth down and moved tools into bathroom. 0:09 sent texts to other client, went to truck to grab more materials and tools. 0:07 taped razor knife and tools to not leave marks on ceramic tub 1:36 removed caulk and grout from tub and tub to floor floor and sink/countertop. Used multi-tool, Stanley razor blade, paint scraper, and $30 grout multitool blade that lasts only for 2 tubs. Advised homeowners to either use a dehumidifier or a heater and fans for 2 days as there was water and mold behind caulk. 0:17 cleaned up bathroom and packed out 0:05 talked to customer, scheduling when to come back to caulk.

Second day: Time and gas to come back out to finish job:

2:07 pack in, discusssed schedule and other projects that want done for 40 minutes. degrease areas to caulk, looked for tools in truck, discussed baseboard issue, got tools for truck then nailed baseboard, spackled baseboard nail holes and other issues. 0:41 text other client (5 mins), taped tools to not get silicone caulk on it, preparing tools and silicone profilers that had gunk and small dents, prepping areas for caulking. 0:47 caulked 2 feet and the corner going to floor. I removed caulk and redid it. It’s been 2 months since I’ve caulked 100% silicone caulk is a bit tricky. 3:54 finished bathtub and bathrub to floor. I hate silicone. Had to redo 2 corners, learned and did it by letting the vertical lines set then caulking the horizontal sides to make it look aesthetic. 1:08 caulked sink and countertop. cleaned up 0:06 packout out and left.

Total job site time was 11.5 hours. I recaulked one tub, one contertop, and retailed one baseboard with filling blemishes with spackle. I spent about 30 combined time on my phone texting, changing music, etc. I spent 20 mins looking for tools. What are your thoughts? I’m self employed so I’m trying to see how much time it would take others and how their work day looks when not halfassing and being very thorough.

We don’t charge by the hour. I charge by the project. Recaulking a shower is a $350 job. And I’d plan for it to take up to half a day. I also control the client in that I don’t let them sit and talk to me and distract me for the entire time I’m working. if there’s other things to talk about and to look at, we do that before I start or after I’m complete. Mixing it in with everything else is very inefficient. Also, charging by the job means you don’t have to worry about stopping to get materials, running out to the truck to get a drink of water, or texting another client. The client knows ahead of time what it’s going to cost. my clients love that.
