Hi. For some context, I’m a 15 year old working in a nearby coffee shop. My boss wanted to update the interior, and very specifically wanted to create a map print of the local area that fits the vibe of the restaurant. Since we actually have something similar hanging at home and I taught myself some basic Photoshop skills, the boss asked me and I actually received extra money to make one. I stepped up my game and made something I was really proud of. 3 weeks later through word of mouth, another local business (craft shop) actually came to me and asked if I can make something similar for her!

So I was thinking of taking the next step and maybe turn this into a business. I don’t need to make much, just some pocket money would be alright. However, I have no idea where to begin and how to conduct proper research. All I know is that there’s massive competition on websites like Etsy, where established sellers dominate the market. And I actually made something pretty similar. However, it’s so fun working with maps!

Would it even be worth it to start an online business like this, or does anyone have good advice for me? I will definitely pursue this in my free time. Even if I fail, I learn.

Don’t overthink it. Just try it. Go where your competition is. That’s where your customers are too. If it’s Etsy then list your stuff there. You don’t need the whole market. Just a little piece of it: especially at the start.

And above all learn and have fun.

They’re pretty much the standard thing that you see on Etsy as I took inspiration from that. I’m currently reworking ideas to differentiate myself from that
